"The Dean campaign now claims 255,173 volunteers. They are expecting 450,000 by the end of September and 1 million by Dec. 31. By the end of the primaries next spring, Dean is shooting for 2 million volunteers and another million on top of that by the time the general election rolls around in November 2004. If all goes according to plan--and granted that's a very big if--Howard Dean will have awakened a long-sleeping giant: the American electorate.

Karl Rove is a smart man. A smart man in Karl Rove's shoes would be crapping himself right about now."

This is from a cover story in the Philidelphia Weekly. It's a great article with a lot of really good lines in it. It specificially addresses what makes Dean different from other insurgent candidates in the past. I think this is important, esp. to avoid the public getting their views set of him as a "wacky liberal" or the next George McGovern -- loveable, anti-war, and losing. I think that Dean is actually very well placed for the national election. I mean, maybe he is a wacky liberal compared to the neoconservatives that pull the strings on King George II, but those pepole are way to the right of your average right-winger, and certainly extremist compared to the moderate/independent voters. George campaigned as a moderate, but has ruled as a far right winger. Of course, if the economies improves and Iraq settles down, it's unlikely anyone could beat George.

But I think those two items are unlikely.
