Back in Mississippi in 1955, Emmett Till, a 14-year old black boy was murdered and left floating in the Tallahatchie River. The men charged with the murder were acquitted by an all-white jury, though the NYTimes notes that the men later bragged about the murder to Look magazine. Just recently, the U.S. Department of Justice has reopened the investigation of the murder.

While this news is noteworthy by itself, I took note of it because it is related to a band I like. Named emmett swimming, they're from Northern Virginia and they started around the same time I began college at Georgetown, so I happened to have been at one of their earliest shows. The emmett in their name refers to Emmett Till, but in their vision of the world, Emmett is still swimming, fighting against the racism that killed him. I always thought that was a cool backstory for a band's name.

Their music is pretty good too.
