So, I read an article in tomorrow's (Tuesday) New York Times about how China is poised to adopt automobile fuel economy standards that will actually be TOUGHER than those in the United States. Granted, they aren't especially high here, but this is a developing nation we're talking about. AND, what's even cooler, is that they're treating SUVs and trucks the same as other cars, unlike here in the U.S. where SUVs are characterized as light trucks, which have a lower economy standard. The article was full of unhappy auto executives resigned to the fact that a country with 1 billion potential consumers can tell them to sell more fuel efficient cars and they have to listen. It's interesting that China's leadership has recognized their increasing dependence on imported oil and the strategic dangers involved with that. Too bad our leaders aren't as forward looking.

You'd think they were heavily involved in the oil industry, or something.
