There are only like 6 or 7 countries in the world that recognize territorial claims over antarctica, the 5 or 6 countries that have claims on land in the continent, and Finland, which has claims to areas in the arctice. It supports its southern neighbors, in the hope that that will some how legitimate their claims. The Argentines have actually made a practice of taking pregnant Argentine women to antarctica to have their children, so that there will be Argentine citizens born there. This is one of my more favorite quirks of international politics, and I thought of it in a very different context. I was thinking how M. has a claim (maybe there's a little flag there) on a small section of my heart, sort of like antarctica. Not that that there are a lot of competing claims. It's more of an historical claim. One kept in a museum behind velvet ropes. Preserved, in time, like an astronaut's foot print on the moon. Something nice to look back on once in a while, but not something one spends all day gazing at.
